Solar Energy in Singapore

As previously I have mentioned about the SolarNova program that was launched by EDB Singapore, i would like to commend this local company, Sunseap who clinched the tender with the Housing Development Board (HDB) to install solar panels on the roofs of HDB flats.

Sunseap was founded by two long time friends who wanted to search for affordable and sustainable ways to deliver clean and renewable energy. It was a tough start up journey in the beginning, but they managed to secure fundings and the company has proven to be successful in its en route to providing cleaner energy; solar energy.

Apart from its successful tender bid with HDB Singapore, it has also secured a deal with Apple Singapore to provide them with a hundred percent renewable electricity from their solar energy systems built atop across hundreds of buildings in Singapore.

This would make Apple the first company in Singapore to run exclusively on renewable energy and also signifies a big move towards powering their operations across nations with renewable energy.

Apple being one of the most successful and innovative firms in the world, will be a great role model to other organizations and large corporations around the world. If Apple could start reducing their carbon footprint and invest more in green energy, more companies might follow suit and see the need for sustainable practices in their working environment and processes.

Sunseap is also working with various government agencies and energy service companies to expand their product offerings to different clients from different industries. Singapore has a limited land mass, and solar energy has proven to be the more viable green energy that could be used at this point of time. The unique proposition by Sunseap to provide renewable energy by their solar panels without needing to install any solar energy systems on the clients’ side, as land mass is limited and expensive, it encourages more buy-in for the solar energy system. It is rewarding to know that the government and more private companies are engaged in more sustainable use of energy.

In the future, if the cost of production of solar panels are gradually decreasing, it would be beneficial for the companies and the society as a whole. And, hopefully Singapore would be able to reach its target goal of 350 MWp of solar power by 2020 and be able to discover alternative modes of renewable energy to power up the increasing energy usage in Singapore.
